Today I had a heated debate with a student at a university about the effects of music on people. More specifically, Death Metal. He argues that death metal influences people in such a away that it can lead to open violence and aggression towards other people, especially homicides. In my own experience, I find most dedicated death metal bands to be slightly amusing. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to say that they are a joke, but I definitely feel a cliche going on while I listen to it. Never have I felt compelled to do morally wrong things simply by listening to music, let alone metal! I do however find it rather discouraging to know that some people view some genres of music with such a biased glance. Are people really controlled so much by music, or do they use it as an excuse?
